Magician, illusionist and light comedian. Born North London. Early interest in magic inspired by his father, a keen amateur conjuror. Joined Magic Circle at a very young age.
Army service during World War Two led to involvement in force’s shows culminating in several tours with ENSA. On demob his experience led him into professional entertainment and he spent 4 years with the Fol de Rols Concert Party. Part of this was a highly successful cod magic double act with a then unknown Sir Norman Wisdom (later to become a Water Rat). From there he performed solo for a season at The Windmill.
Strangely it was not his magical skills which initially made him a household name. This came from his regular appearances on the popular television game show “What’s My Line?” with celebrities of the day, such as Barbara Kelly, Lady Isobel Barnett and the fearsome Gilbert Harding.
Firmly established in his own right, 1954 saw the beginning of his long television career with 6 runs of his series “It’s Magic”. Thereafter, he hosted many shows on both BBC and ITV channels. (i.e. “The Nixon Line”, “Magic Box”, “Nixon at Nine Five”, etc.. The latter saw his pairing with foxy puppet Basil Brush who became a TV star himself.) In addition he performed in many theatre and cabaret seasons as well as radio work and private engagements for the Royal Family. For most of his career his scriptwriter and ideas man was Past King Rat George Martin.
David was a charming man with a warm style which bordered on a kind of bumbling shyness. However, this was deceptive, because he was a perfectionist and a master of his art. He pioneered the use of camera trickery, which brought some criticism from magic purists, but he never let effects intrude on his undoubted natural ability. His approach was like that of a genial uncle.
He was King Rat for two years running, 1976-77.
