Why are you called the Water Rats?
In 1889 - the year of our conception - our trotting pony, 'The Magpie' was being led back to his stabling in the pouring rain. A passing bus driver called out 'looks more like a bleedin' water rat! To read the full story click here
Who actually started it all?
Our recognised founding father was a music hall comedian called Joe Elvin. To read more about Joe Elvin click here

How do you become a member?
Only performers or those closely associated with the profession are eligible. You need to find a proposer and a seconder from amongst the membership to bring your name before us. If you are accepted by our ruling council - there follows an involved voting procedure amongst the entire membership. It isn't easy to become a Rat!
Who are Companion Rats?
These are men who are not performers but have given signal service to our Order or are known for their charitable endeavours or have achieved great status in their chosen field - and preferably - all three!
Does your charities fund only help other performers?
No. We try to help all sorts of people and organisations. Our trustees meet every month to decide where the money goes and who will receive help. We do assist performers who can no longer work because of age or disability but we have given equipment and assistance to many non theatrical individuals and organisations.
